Matblack is the graphic creation of Cristal Smith who, in 2001, saw the potential of using black rubber as a versatile material for displaying her unique designs.

Inspired by the silhouette-like effect of the rubber when placed on various surfaces, she worked on a range of designs reflecting our South African lifestyle.

Teaming up with partners Lorna Kurz and Kevin Bacon in December 2004, Colourbrown Creations CC was formed to produce placemats and coasters under the name “Matblack”.
